How phonics helps children read
Phonics teaches that letters stand for sounds. Once a child knows the sounds, they can blend them: /c/ /a/ /t/ β cat. Start with letter sounds, then short-vowel CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words, then digraphs such as sh, ch and th.
Tips
- Say the sounds together with the app, slowly, then faster.
- Practise a few minutes every day rather than a long session once a week.
- The voice uses your device's speech engine, so sounds may differ slightly between phones and computers.
